French School 18th Century

The 18th century French School is characterised by a strong knowledge of form, construction and movement. The modelling is usually not done with a high contrast light effect and no attempt is made to hide the hatching/construction of the figure. The other important feature is that these life drawings are usually envisioned as part of an imaginary picture or scene. A model standing with a rope is transformed to a Greek diety standing in a wild arcadian landscape with an axe or staff. This aspect of the drawings is important because it shows that at this point in time they were a means to an end, i.e making a picture.
